'1917’ Trailer: Sam Mendes’ Epic World War One Drama Goes Behind Enemy Lines

Between 1914 and 1918, the First World War was happening which split Europe in two, and “1917” looks at a deadly mission two soldiers were tasked with.  The film’s director is Sam Mendes, who has previously worked on the last two James Bond films (“Skyfall” and “Spectre”), sees him now take on the conflict that happened over 100 years ago.

The premise of the film is two British soldiers, Schofield and Blake (George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman), have been told to go behind enemy lines in an attempt to stop hundreds of soldiers walking into a death trap. It is vital that they deliver this message, as Blake’s brother is one of those soldiers.

War films have seemed to become a lot grittier, with ‘2017s “Dunkirk” a prime example of this. Christopher Nolan created something that relied more on the sounds of the War than the dialogue between characters, creating suspense. It seems that ‘1917’ will also incorporate those suspenseful moments, as showcased in the first trailer which saw soldiers walking through a deserted underground bunker/trench, only for an explosion to go off.

Explosions, gunfire, and darkness are all going to be found here as the two soldiers attempt to get behind the enemy. But let’s not forget we have Colin Firth (“Kingsman: The Secret Service”) and Benedict Cumberbatch (“The Imitation Game”) here as well. It seems Firth gives an unnerving speech before he sends the two soldiers off in the first trailer, sending chills down the spine as he knows what the consequences could should they fail.

Along with Firth and Cumberbatch sees Richard Madden (“The Bodyguard”), Mark Strong (“Shazam!”), Andrew Scott (“Sherlock”) and Claire Duburcq are all set to star. The wartime film is produced by Neal Street Productions for DreamWorks with Universal Pictures handling distribution of the film domestically and internationally (along with Amblin Partners).
