2014 Oscar Winners: 'Gravity' Wins 7, '12 Years A Slave' Takes Best Picture, 'American Hustle' Shut Out

2014 Oscar Winners

…And that’s it on another year. As always, the Oscars were both exciting, (mostly) sleep inducing, surprising and left us with lots to talk about. But it’s late, we’re tired and filled with nacho cheese, so we’re going to be a bit brief for now.

Tied with “American Hustle” for most nominations heading into the night, “Gravity” led the pack with seven awards, taking the tech categories as expected and major prizes for Best Director for Alfonso Cuaron, Best Cinematography for Emmanuel Lubezki, Best Original Score for Steven Price and Best Editing. But when it came to the big prize, it was “12 Years A Slave” that nabbed Best Picture, in addition to prizes for Best Adapted Screenplay for John Ridley, and Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong’o.

Meanwhile, “American Hustle” was completely shut out, taking home nothing after earning 10 nominations. The film joins “True Grit” and “Gangs Of New York” in the 0-10 Oscar trivia books.

Among the surprises, Spike Jonze took home a trophy for Best Original Screenplay for “Her,” while “The Great Gatsby” wound up a two-time Oscar winner thanks to Costume and Production Design. Full list of winners below.

EARLIER: The campaigning is over and now the rented tuxedos are coming out for the 86th annual Academy Awards. It all comes down to this night, where Hollywood honors their own and some the past year’s most acclaimed and talked about movies get one last hurrah in front of national audience.

So who can you bet on this year? Well, that’s just the thing—aside from Cate Blanchett‘s guaranteed win for Best Actress for “Blue Jasmine,” there is no obvious frontrunner this time around. Heading into the night, “American Hustle” and “Gravity” lead the pack with ten nominations each, with “12 Years A Slave” closed behind with nine. Can Alfonso Cuaron’s technical wonder break out beyond technical awards? Does ‘Hustle’ have the stuff hold off ‘Slave’? Or will Steve McQueen‘s powerful and important drama lead the night?

We’ve made our predictions about how the night will play out, but just remember, Oscar always has a couple of curveballs up his golden sleeves. So below, we’ll have the winners as they’re announced, with a full wrap up to follow after the curtain is drawn on another year at the Dolby Theatre.
