After posting healthy numbers in limited release last weekend and a $3 million opening in France (where it is being heavily pushed), “Spring Breakers” is getting another publicity boost ahead of its expansion this weekend, courtesy of none other than James Franco’s grandma.
The frankly, pretty fantastic new promo spot has Franco (who gives a great performance in the film) introducing his very lovely seeming Grandma who extols the virtues of her grandson’s latest piece of work with the neat slogan “lotsa parties, lotsa drinking, lotsa girls.” It’s a 30-second spot, shot on a home camera, with intercut flashes from the plethora of bikinis, drugs and gunplay, which is the film’s signature.
“Spring Breakers” managed to outgross every other Harmony Korine picture in its first weekend, and having expanded to a thousand theaters this weekend, looks like it’s going to be an impressive crossover hit with the college crowd. And perhaps Franco’s shrewd publicity move will help put the arthouse crime-caper over with the senior citizen crowd too… [Facebook]
