'Argo' Wins Big At The 70th Golden Globe Awards Taking Best Picture & Best Director

null

Earlier: The oft-repeated maxim is that the Golden Globes do not matter. They do not. However, if you take the polar opposites of the season of critic awards (high-brow, cerebral) and the Globes (extremely populist), you can often (when also considering more significant Guild awards, of course) split the difference and land where the Academy Awards ultimately will.

For your recapping pleasure, in case you've forgotten, the front-runners of the Globes this year, nom-wise, are "Lincoln" (7 nominations), "Argo" (with 5 nominations) and "Django Unchained" (also with 5 noms including two in the same category).  Meanwhile, "Zero Dark Thirty," "Les Miserables" and "Silver Linings Playbook" all kept up a strong showing with four nominations.

Tonight should be interesting if only because three of the five directors nominated for Best Director tonight were not nominated for an Oscar Best director, including Ben Affleck, Kathryn Bigelow and Quentin Tarantino. If any of them win best director tonight (which is entirely possible, in fact Affleck and Bigelow have a strong shot), it will only rouse the chorus of gripers that said these directors were snubbed by the Academy (Megan Ellison among them). If last year was any indication, the Globes are not much of an augur for Oscars. "The Descendants" was the big winner last year (Best Drama, Clooney for Best Actor) and Scorsese won Best Director (none of these wins were repeated). There is often some overlap, but it's really determining which wins will also connect with the Academy.

Hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, the nominees are below, and we'll be updating the winners as they happen all evening long. If you're looking for silly, snarky commentary, please make sure to follow us on Twitter (@ThePlaylist) this evening.

Post Show: We'll have more analysis tomorrow, but "Argo" perhaps wasn't a total surprise given that it had the Hollywood Foreign Press sweetspot mix of entertainment, thrills and smarts. "Lincoln" and "Zero Dark Thirty" might have been just a little too highbrow for them and not as fun. Affleck takes the Best Director prize, but as we mentioned earlier, awkward, he's not even nominated for an Oscar. Tons of pundits will kick and scream how this changes the Oscar race significantly, but keep your pants on, it probably doesn't.
