We can only imagine the zeal Screen Gems is experiencing when thinking about how their upcoming adaptation "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" could potentially tap into the young adult market in the same way that the "Twilight" and "The Hunger Games" movies have. However, after setting the leads with Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell-Bower, the recent casting seem to appease more of the "adult" adult crowd rather than the young adult crowd. While there might be some tweens that are excited over having "Mad Men" actor Jared Harris and "Game of Thrones" actress Lena Headey cast in unspecified roles following the acquisitions of Kevin Durand ("X-Men Origins: Wolverine," the upcoming "Resident Evil: Retribution") and wrestler Robert Maillet ("Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows"), they might be happier to see that Kevin Zegers ("Gossip Girl," "The Jane Austen Book Club") has been cast as well.
For those that haven't read the Cassandra Clare novel on which the film is based, 'City of Bones' will follow Collins as teenager Clary Fray, who discovers she is a descendant of a line of Shadowhunters, an order of half-angel warriors who protect the world from demons. Campbell-Bower will play fellow Shadowhunter/love interest Jace Wayland, while Zegers will play Alec Lightwood, the gay brother of the obnoxious, whip-wielding Shadowhunter Isabelle (cast with French actress Jemima West in June). With Clary and Alec both in love with Jace, expect friction galore.
Harald Zwart ("The Karate Kid" remake) will helm 'City of Bones,' which is scheduled for release on August 23, 2013. Zwart will likely be filling out the rest of his cast in short order now, and, as you can see here, there's still many more roles left. [Just Jared]
