Sony Pictures Classics were the first to realize Luca Guadagnino‘s “Call Me By Your Name” might be something special, scooping up the film shortly before the Sundance Film Festival kicked off last month. And they were right on the money, as the romantic drama was one of the buzziest films in Park City this year, and is already being talked about as a potential awards vehicle. We’ll save that discussion for another time, but the movie is now headed to Berlin and the first clip has arrived.
The film stars Armie Hammer and Timothée Chalamet, in the adaptation of the novel by André Aciman, and follows the relationship that unfolds between a teenager and his father’s assistant over a breezy Italian summer. Here’s the synopsis:
It’s the hot, sun-drenched summer of 1983 and Elio is at his parents’ country seat in northern Italy. The 17-year-old idles away the time listening to music, reading books and swimming until one day his father’s new American assistant arrives at their large villa. Oliver is charming and, like Elio, has Jewish roots; he is also young, self-confident and good-looking. At first Elio is somewhat cold and distant towards the young man but before long the two begin going out together on excursions. Elio begins to make tentative overtures towards Oliver that become increasingly intimate – even if, as Oliver says, ‘one can’t talk about such things’. As the short summer progresses, the pair’s mutual attraction grows more intense.
No release date yet for “Call Me By Your Name,” but it’s already one of the year’s must-see movies.
