If you were on the fence about attending the “Apocalypse Now” screening at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, get ready to plan your evening. Even though fans were already excited about Francis Ford Coppola being on hand to present a never-before-seen cut and restoration of the iconic film, in honor of its 40th anniversary, now, we learned that filmmaker Steven Soderbergh will be on hand to hold a Q&A with Coppola.
The screening of the “Apocalypse Now: Final Cut” version of the film is probably enough for any die-hard Coppola fan to want to attend. However, to have a chance to hear two great filmmakers discuss the work (and likely much more) is something completely worthwhile, in its own right. Who wouldn’t want to hear Soderbergh, who is perhaps one of the biggest cinephiles in all the world (check out his yearly wrap-up blog post for proof), interview one of the biggest names in American cinema?
For those that are completely unaware of “Apocalypse Now” or Francis Ford Coppola, I’d have to first question how often you read The Playlist, and then assume that you lived in a cave for the last 40 years and are finally assimilating into the modern world. If that’s the case, then allow me to welcome you, and then tell you that you want to be at this screening.
Of course, the ‘Final Cut’ version of “Apocalypse Now” is far from the only time that Coppola has taken a stab at his war film. After feeling displeased with the rushed ending of the original cut, the director famously crafted “Apocalypse Now Redux,” which got its own formal release, and added a ton of previously cut footage. Then there have been bootlegs of other versions of the film floating around, but nothing official like ‘Final Cut.’
For those wanting to attend, the screening takes place on Sunday, April 28.
