So, maybe “Charlie’s Angels” didn’t do as well at the box office as Elizabeth Banks hoped, but that speed bump isn’t going to completely stop her from moving forward in her filmmaking career. And apparently, she’s not done with big, potentially franchisable films just yet, either.
According to Variety, Banks has agreed to direct the upcoming Universal film “Invisible Woman,” which, per usual, she’ll also star in. While the exact plot of the film is being kept secret for now (ten bucks says it has to do with a woman that turns invisible), one thing is known for sure — “Invisible Woman” is completely different than the upcoming Blumhouse-produced “Invisible Man.” The report claims that the two ‘Invisible’ films are wholly separate and have zero chance of crossing over.
“Invisible Woman” is set to be written by Erin Cressida Wilson, who previously wrote the script for “The Girl on the Train.” The script is based on an original idea pitched by Banks.
There’s no word on whether or not “Invisible Woman” might tie together with any of the other Universal Monsters films that are currently in various stages of development. As mentioned, there’s already the “Invisible Man,” which feels like its own thing. Then you have the recently-announced “Renfield,” which puts a spin on the Dracula story and will be directed by Dexter Fletcher. Finally, there’s “Dark Army,” which will be directed by Paul Feig. The filmmaker has said his film will feature multiple monsters and will have a tone reminiscent of the classics.
“Charlie’s Angels” isn’t the only film directed by Banks. Previous to the action film, the actress-turned-filmmaker helmed the wildly popular sequel “Pitch Perfect 2.” We’ll next see her on screen in the upcoming TV series “Mrs. America,” where she’ll be acting opposite Cate Blanchett on Hulu.
