Peter Jackson’s three ‘Lord of the Rings’ films have already stood the test of time to become some of the most acclaimed and beloved fantasy films ever created. Of course, the same can’t be said about “The Hobbit,” but that’s neither here nor there. Part of the reason people adore the ‘Rings’ films is due to Elijah Wood’s portrayal of Frodo Baggins. And speaking to IndieWire, the actor is still down to revive his character for the forthcoming “Lord of the Rings” TV series on Amazon, even if the show isn’t accurately titled.
“I am super fascinated by what they’re doing with the show,” the actor said. “They’re calling it ‘The Lord of the Rings,’ but I think that’s slightly misleading. From what I understand, the material they are working on exists chronologically further back in history in the lore of ‘Lord of the Rings’ or Middle Earth than any characters represented in ‘Lord of the Rings.’ It sounds more ‘Silmarillion’ era. Not to get nerdy, but it’s the Second Age of Middle Earth.”
While the actor admits he doesn’t know anything more about Amazon’s ‘Rings’ series than fans do, it has been confirmed that the TV series is expected to take place centuries before the original trilogy, during what is referred to as “The Second Age.” So, the actor isn’t wrong in his criticism, but we all know why Amazon is using the ‘Rings’ title. Gotta attract those eyeballs.
And though he has issues with the title of the series, that isn’t going to stop Wood from showing up in a cameo role, if someone were to ask him.
“Absolutely,” he said. “If there was a world where that made sense and was organic to what they’re doing than yes. Look, any excuse to get to go to New Zealand to work on something I am absolutely there.”
The “Lord of the Rings” TV series is expected to restart production in New Zealand soon, but there’s still no official word on when the first season might premiere. As of now, the show is already confirmed for two seasons, with Amazon hoping this series is well worth the reported $1 billion investment.
