While David Gordon Green‘s “Prince Avalanche” — one of the best films of 2013 so far — may have emerged as a surprise, it appears he’s not finished with his remake of the little known Icelandic film “Either Way.” His picture, which stars Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch, centering around the relationship between two city workers spending the summer in solitude working on the roadways of a county highway ravaged by wildfire, is one that he wants to tackle again. And again. And again. Back in January, he told us he wants to remake it three more times (seriously), including a version in Australia. And recently in the country to promote the film, he spilled a few more details on what his ideas are for that particular do-over.
“I want to remake ‘Prince Avalanche’ in Australia with two aggressive ex-prisoners working on the side of the road, but it’s not a comedy,” he told SBS. “It’s called ‘Hit the Road Jack‘ and is more of an action movie where they beat the crap out of each other. It’s more of an aggressive masculine thing because Australia is where all the men live. Men have disappeared across the planet except in Australia.”
As for why he wants to undergo what seems like a James Franco-ian exercise in tackling the material again, it’s from a desire to let new settings take the basic premise and reshape it in interesting ways. “I would like to do the Bollywood musical version and any version that anyone wanted to make,” he told us at Sundance. “My assistant director on this movie, Atilla [Salih Yücer], he’s Turkish and he wants to remake it in Turkey. And then you just personalize it for the culture, the territory, wherever the terrain is and make it. To franchise it would be amazing.”
A franchise of a low key indie movie? Seems just crazy enough to work, and pretty cool too. Green isn’t sure if he would direct them all, or pass along the reins to other filmmakers, but he’s dead serious the idea. And you know, we’d kinda like to see it happen. But first comes “Prince Avalanche,” which arrives on August 9th.
