Trailers for the networks’ fall shows are upon us (more on that later today), and here’s a daring direction for a new show: a remake of a Scandinavian crime drama! No but really, FX‘s “The Bridge,” a trailer for which just arrived on Indiewire, looks interesting: a police procedural featuring the police of two different countries working on the same case, after a body turns up at a Texan border crossing between the US and Mexico. In the original it was Denmark and Sweden, but really this version seems to offer more: murderous drug cartels, lawless shanty towns and yawning wealth gaps are easier to come by in Juarez than in Copenhagen (probably). There’s also a British/French take on the way called “The Tunnel,” starring Stephen Dillane from “Game Of Thrones,” and “In Bruges” actress Clemence Poesy.
On top of that, “The Bridge” has Demián Bichir, Oscar-nominated last year for “A Better Life” (also about life and crime on both sides of the Rio Grande, but what’s a Mexican actor to do?) and Diane Kruger playing the lead American cop. If you happen to be a hardcore “West Wing” fan, it also has Diana-Maria Riva and Annabeth Gish, but the rest of you aren’t expected to know who they are, so don’t worry. Gerardo Naranjo, behind the excellent “Miss Bala,” also directed the pilot, so that’s also a good sign.
This could be good: the setting, the talent, the central conceit — all have promise. We’ll find out on July 10th, at 10pm.
