Anyone who saw Francis Ford Coppola’s under-appreciated family drama “Tetro” last year should know what we’re talking about when we predict big things for newcomer Alden Ehrenreich.
The twenty year-old shone brightly as the lost younger brother of Vincent Gallo’s titular character, providing the film with its emotional core and heart in an impressive debut performance — one which found its way into our Breakthrough Performances piece for 2009. One review had even flatteringly, yet at the same time very reasonably, pegged him as a cross between Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio and a young Jack Nicholson.
It’s no wonder then that Ehrenreich has evidently scored a role in Sofia Coppola’s own family drama “Somewhere” due for release later this year. The role is a rare cinematic venture for Ehrenreich who is seemingly developing his acting through academic means whilst keeping an eye out for interesting parts, though we can’t imagine why he wouldn’t be beating offers off with a stick.
No word yet on who the young actor will play in “Somewhere” however, as it’s described as a “small role,” it likely puts him alongside Chris Pontius, Michelle Monaghan, Benicio Del Toro, indie-rockers Rooney and Playboy bunnies Karissa and Kristina Shannon as those who’ll appear in cameo-like or supporting roles.
The film, starring Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning, of course, centers on a hard-living Hollywood star whose transient life at the Chateau Marmont is turned on its head when his estranged, 11 year old daughter drops in for an unexpected visit. It’ll likely hit the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals later this year before a fall release through Focus Features. We can’t wait.
