Aldis Hodge Will Play Hawkman In 'Black Adam'

Following standout dramatic turns in “Clemency,” Showtime‘s “City On A Hill,” and most recently, the critically acclaimed “One Night In Miami” from director Regina King, actor Aldis Hodge is about to try something different and take flight in the superhero genre. Today, Warner Bros. cast the actor as Hawkman in their upcoming “Black Adam” film, news of which Hodge confirmed on Instagram.

Dwayne Johnson stars as “Black Adam” in the upcoming anti-hero/superhero movie and at the recent DC Fandome, revealed which members of the Justice Society Of America were joining the film as once teased. He revealed Doctor Fate, Cyclone, the previously announced Atom Smash (played by Noah Centineo), and of course Hawkman, but the casting of Hodge was only revealed today. Presumably, the actors playing Fate and Cyclone will be unveiled soon.

Hawkman is a character usually associated with the Justice League, but also the Justice Society of America which is a golden age superhero team generally set in the 1940s. There are different incarnations of the character—especially differing in the 1940s, reincarnation of an ancient Egyptian prince iteration, and the present-day version—but Hawkman’s identity in recent years has settled as the character being an alien police humanoid from the planet Thanagar. Whatever they decide on, Hawkman is usually characterized by his use of archaic weaponry and by large, artificial wings, attached to a harness made from the special Nth metal that allows flight.

“Black Adam” is currently set for a December 2021 release date. Jaume Collet-Serra (“Non-Stop,” “Run All Night,” “The Shallows”) is set to direct. Black Adam is expected to eventually face off against Shazam in “Shazam 3!” as the characters are adversaries in the comics. Hodge will be seen next in the “Birthday Cake,” and technically, still, “One Night In Miami,” which has been seen by festival critics, but won’t be released by Amazon until later in the awards season.
