Swedish Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander (“Ex Machina“) is leading a series remake of “Irma Vep” that hails from A24 Films, HBO, and director Olivier Assayas (“Carlos“). The project is a remake of the French film “Les Vampires,” which got a cinematic remake, also directed by Assayas, starring Maggie Chung back in 1996.
There is an exciting update concerning the person asked to compose the show’s score. It’s been revealed by Centre National du Cinema that Thomas Bangalter, one-half of the iconic, recently-broken-up Parisian electro duo Daft Punk, is officially scoring the new HBO series that will debut early next month.
HBO has also released the official logline for the series which reads as follows:
Mira (Alicia Vikander) is an American movie star disillusioned by her career and a recent breakup, who comes to France to star as “Irma Vep” in a remake of the French silent film classic, “Les Vampires.” Set against the backdrop of a lurid crime thriller, Mira struggles as the distinctions between herself and the character she plays begin to blur and merge. Irma Vep reveals to us the uncertain ground that lies at the border of fiction and reality, artifice and authenticity, art and life.
The rest of the cast consists of Vincent Macaigne, Adria Arjona, Jerrod Carmichael, Carrie Brownstein, Fala Chen, Lars Eidinger, Vincent Lacoste, Hippolyte Girardot, and Alex Descas. Recent Oscar-nominee Kristen Stewart (“Spencer,” “Crimes of The Future“) has a small role in the series, a reunion with Assayas after she starred in his 2016 film, “Personal Shopper.”
Vikander was most recently seen in David Lowery‘s fantastical mature Aurthrian film “The Green Knight” and is still attached to reprise the Lara Croft role in a “Tomb Raider” sequel helmed by Misha Green (“Lovecraft Country“) based on the beloved action-adventure video game franchise.
“Irma Vep” begins airing on HBO starting June 6.
