Andrew Garfield Sings For 'Rent' In New Trailer For tick, tick...BOOM!

Ladies and gentlemen, Andrew Garfield, can sing. That’s the big takeaway from the first trailer for “tick, tick…BOOM!” the movie adaptation of Jonathan Larson’s semi-autobiographical musical that first debuted in 1990. And if you don’t recognize Larson’s name, you’ll likely know the musical that won him a Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize posthumously, “RENT.”

“BOOM!” also happens to be the feature directorial debut of another lauded songwriter and playwright, Lin-Manuel Miranda. And with the movie version of Miranda’s “In The Heights” arriving in theaters on Friday, it’s no surprise that Netflix thought this was a smart time to provide the first look of “BOOM!” to the world.

The stage musical centered on Jon (Garfield), a composer having a life crisis as the clock of time is about to strike at the ripe old age of…30. While his girlfriend (Alexandra Shipp) wants him to settle down, he remains focused on trying to get his new project, “SUPERBIA,” produced either on or Off-Broadway. And, as a birthday party awaits, a childhood friend (Robin de Jesús) has a secret that may or may not give him much-needed perspective.

The cast also includes Vanessa Hudgens, Judith Light, and Bradley Whitford. “BOOM!” was also shot by cinematographer Alice Brooks who – you guessed it – also was the DP on “Heights.” The film was produced by the Imagine Entertainment team of Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and Julie Oh.
