Aubrey Plaza Returns To Emcee Spirit Awards: 'Bow Down To Your Host'

The Oscars may or may not have a host again this year, but the Independent Spirit Awards are continuing the tradition and bringing back last year’s emcee, Aubrey Plaza.  In a release from Film Independent, Plaza noted, Like all great independent film performances, this one deserves a sequel. The people have spoken. Bow down to your host!”

Josh Welsh, President of Film Independent remarked, “At a time when the world is so bitterly divided and civil discourse is almost impossible, it’s nice we can all agree that Aubrey Plaza is the greatest host in the history of hosting. We are thrilled to have her back. Today is also the last day to join Film Independent as a member to get access to the nominated films and vote on the winners. Only a fool would not watch the Spirit Awards on IFC on February 8, 2:00 pm PT, 5:00 pm ET.”

IFC Executive Director Blake Callaway added, “Aubrey is back! Last year, fear of her signature take on hosting duties, kept that other awards show host-less. We are excited to see what she brings to the tent this year.”

The Spirit Awards have always been irreverent, but the last few years have been wonderfully written (and that’s not just the day drinking event influencing everyone’s opinion). Plaza, Andy Samberg, Nick Kroll and John Mulaney as well as Kate McKinnon and Kumail Nanjiani have been on a roll hosting the ceremony over the past half decade.

Plaza is a fixture in Independent Cinema having appeared in the acclaimed “Ingrid Goes West,” “The Little Hours” and “Ned Rifle,” among other titles. She’ll be at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival in January for the new drama “Black Bear” and is currently filming Lina Roessler’s “Best Sellers.” Best known for her role on NBC’s “Parks & Recreation,” Plaza recently ended a three-year run on Noah Hawley’s “Legion” which aired on FX.

The 35th Film Independent Spirit Awards will take place on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at 2:00 pm PT / 5:00 pm ET and air live on IFC.
