'Wings Of Fire': Ava DuVernay To Produce A Netflix Animated Adaptation Of The Novel Series

While it doesn’t appear we’re going to see Ava DuVernay tackle the cosmic DC superhero universe in a “New Gods” film, she’s sticking with genre filmmaking for her next project, a Netflix animated adaptation of the “Wings of Fire” novel series.

According to Netflix, DuVernay is set to produce an animated series based on the “Wings of Fire” novel series from author Tui T. Sutherland. The series will tell the story of a war between tribes of dragons in the mythical world of Pyrrhia. In addition to DuVernay and her ARRAY Filmworks company producing the series, Dan Milano (“Glitch Techs”), Christa Starr (“Mystery Science Theater 3000”), Justin Ridge (“Star Wars Resistance”) are on board as showrunners, with Milano and Starr serving as writers for the series.

“Within this epic book series from the mind of Tui Sutherland is an elegant saga filled with wisdom and wonder, exploring ideas of belonging and bias, camaraderie and community,” said DuVernay. “On behalf of my colleagues Sarah Bremner and Paul Garnes of ARRAY Filmworks, we’re thrilled to partner with Netflix and Warner Bros. Animation for this dynamic adaptation where five young dragonets fulfill their destiny and show viewers how to fulfill their own.”

“The ‘Wings of Fire’ books have captured the imagination of millions,” said Sam Register, President, Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios. “In Ava, Justin, Christa, and Dan we have a visionary creative team that will bring that same sense of wonder and adventure from the books to life with animation and create the next great animated family series at Netflix.”

Melissa Cobb, Vice President, Original Animation, Netflix, added, “We couldn’t be more proud that Ava has chosen Netflix as the home for her first animated series. An epic fantasy saga full of sweep and spectacle, ‘Wings of Fire’ promises to be a must-see event for the whole family.”

Obviously, it’s still quite early in the development of “Wings of Fire,” so Netflix has yet to announce any formal release date.

Here’s the synopsis:
