It’s hard to believe that four years after the release of “10 Cloverfield Lane,” we still don’t have a new feature film from director Dan Trachtenberg. Sure, he’s circled a number of projects, including being one of the many filmmakers to come aboard and leave “Uncharted.” He’s even got a new “Predator” film lined up. But after several years of directing some TV episodes, Trachtenberg has yet to finish a new feature. Maybe that long-in-development “Houdini” might be it?
Back in 2016, after the release of “10 Cloverfield Lane,” it was announced that Dan Trachtenberg was lined up to direct a Harry Houdini biopic that aimed to tackle the untold story of the escapist’s legendary life, based on William Kalush and Larry Sloman‘s book “The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America’s First Superhero.” But since then, we haven’t heard much of anything about the film. Well, until now.
According to THR, not only is Trachtenberg still working on directing this ‘Houdini’ biopic but apparently, the film is set to star Ben Affleck in the title role. The idea of Affleck playing Houdini should be plenty exciting enough for fans to be eagerly anticipating the feature. However, combine that with Trachtenberg, who is a filmmaker that people are anxiously awaiting a new feature from, and this could be a special project.

However, it’s unclear when this ‘Houdini’ film might actually happen. Not only is Trachtenberg working on the aforementioned “Predator” film, but Affleck is also incredibly busy. We have the recent announcement that George Clooney is eyeing the actor for the lead role in the film “The Tender Bar.” There’s the fact that Affleck is also set to reprise his role as Batman in the forthcoming “Flash” film. Oh yeah, and let’s not forget that he’s supposed to write and direct a new film about the making of “Chinatown.” And maybe he’ll revisit that whole “Accountant” sequel that he teases from time to time?
Needless to say, the report that Affleck and Trachtenberg are teaming up for ‘Houdini’ is pretty damn exciting. And yes, we’d probably much rather see the filmmaker working on something other than a fifth “Predator” film. But we’ll just have to see if the long-gestating feature ever sees the light of day. We’re here for it, if it does.
