'Big Time' Trailer: Angel Olsen Shot A Surreal Short Film With Director Kimberly Stuckwisch To Go With Her New Album

Music and film have a symbiotic relationship, one that musician Angel Olsen knows all too well. The singer-songwriter, behind well-received albums such as 2020’s Whole New Mess, is utilizing the creative connection for her next project. “Big Time” represents the artist’s vision — something Olsen contemplated throughout the production of her new album.

Director, writer and producer Kimberly Stuckwisch came on board to help make “Big Time” a reality. Olsen already knew Stuckwisch, having worked with her on the “Like I Used To” video. For the filmmaker, it was important to delve into Olsen’s concept of dreams. What results is an exploration of an unconscious mind that covers everything from repressed sexuality to grief. “For one reason or another, we all have parts of ourselves that we struggle to forgive as well as a part of ourselves we are afraid of exploring or that we think society won’t like—so we push those parts down into our unconscious psyches, into the shadows,” Stuckwisch said. “This is the story of drowning in those fears before releasing your light.”

The film “Big Time” premieres on Twitch’s Amazon Music Channel on June 2. A watch party coinciding with the debut starts at 6:30pm PDT/9:30pm EDT. Viewers from around the world can take part in a Q+A with Olsen and Stuckwisch before a live concert from Brain Dead Studios.

In addition to its streaming debut, the project will have select screenings in Los Angeles and London. The UK date is set for May 17 at London’s Everyman Screen On The Green, with US appearances less than a month later. June 1, the film screens at LA’s Grammy Museum and the next day at Brain Dead Studios. All events feature a special performance by Olsen.

An artist’s vision comes to life in “Big Time.” The 28-minute film accompanies Angel Olsen’s new album, coming out June 3 on Jagjaguwar. Get your first look at the trailer below.
