'Black Adam': Dwayne Johnson Reveals His Justice Society Adversaries

As the star of the first-ever “Black Adam” feature film for Warner Bros., Dwayne Johnson set the stage today for the story and tone of the new movie at DC FanDome. This included a few updates on which members of The Justice Society Of America would be appearing alongside Black Adam in the film.

“Black Adam” is currently set for a December 2021 release date. Jaume Collet-Serra (“Non-Stop,” “Run All Night,” “The Shallows”) is set to direct and the cast, for now, only includes Noah Centineo as the Atom Smasher. During his panel, Johnson shared his promise that Black Adam would remain a “ruthless” character, one who neither works as a traditional villain or hero. Johnson also shared the screen with Centino; in perhaps the least surprising reveal of the day, the two of them traded workout routines with and talked about how they’re getting into the shape for the film.

While plot details have not really been released, Johnson did reveal which members of the Justice Society of America would appear alongside him in the film. Fans can expect to see iconic DC superheroes Hawkman, Doctor Fate, Hour-Man, and Cyclone – in addition to the aforementioned Atom Smasher – facing off against Johnson. That many heroes might just be an equal playing field for Hollywood’s most iconic action star.

“Black Adam” is thought to include the 1940s past where Black Adam was more of a hero—in this version crossing paths with the Justice Society— and the present-day iteration of the character who has turned something closer to a weary villain (and meets up with present-day character Atom Smasher, the godson of the 1940s Atom). The character is also a major adversary of “Shazam!” in the comics and it is likely he will face off against Zachary Levi’s version of the hero, in likely the third film of that franchise.

Black Adam” is currently set to face off against “Sherlock Holmes 3” in 2021, but its greater competition may be a few days earlier on December 17 with the long-belated release of “Avatar 2.
