Bradley Cooper Reportedly Eyed To Star As Barry Gibb In Bee Gees Biopic

From an outsider’s perspective, you may think that Bradley Cooper would never attempt to do a musical drama for the rest of his career. How could he possibly top the work he did in “A Star Is Born,” which earned him Oscar nominations and turned out to be a monster box office hit. Not bad for a film that marked his directorial debut and featured his talents as the star, as well. But hey, if it worked once, why not try it again? And according to a new report, it appears that Cooper is ready to jump back into the role of a big-time singer, however in someone else’s film.

According to Baz Bamigboye over at the Daily Mail, Cooper has been asked by producers if he’d like to star as Barry Gibb in the upcoming Bee Gees musical biopic that is currently in development. For those not steeped in Bee Gees knowledge, Barry Gibb and his brothers, twins Maurice and Robin, formed the musical trio back in the ‘60s after arriving in London from Australia. From there, the Bee Gees scored a #1 hit in 1967.

Of course, with the rise of Disco, the Bee Gees became a household name, thanks in no small part to the soundtrack to “Saturday Night Fever.” That album featured the massive hit songs “How Deep Is Your Love,” “Night Fever,” and “More Than A Woman.” And yes, just as with every musical group of that era, troubles brewed and drama ensued. Plenty to make a movie out of, needless to say.

The untitled Bee Gees musical biopic is written by Anthony McCarten. And if you’re unsure whether or not McCarten is the right guy for the job, just take a look at his most recent filmography, where he landed Oscar nominations for “The Two Popes,” “The Darkest Hour,” and “The Theory of Everything.” Oh yeah, and don’t forget that McCarten is the man who wrote “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which earned almost $1 billion at the box office.

The Bee Gees biopic is still in the early stages of development, as a director hasn’t even been chosen (perhaps Cooper?). Plus, the actor is currently in production on the new Guillermo del Toro film, “Nightmare Alley.”
