'Child’s Play' Reboot Trailer: The Franchise That Refused To Die Out Is Back With Aubrey Plaza

Not every horror franchise has stayed as solid as “Child’s Play.” Despite all odds, Don Mancini’soriginal 1988 story about a Good Guys doll possessed by the soul of a serial killer still remains relevant as a cult slasher. However, just in case some are starting to weary of the same old Chucky, MGM—which distributed the first movie—has decided to relaunch the franchise giving it a fresh start.

Even though not much information has been provided so far, the movie poster suggests that the updated Chucky will incorporate new tech, allowing remote control. Besides, this time the doll goes under the name “Buddi,” which is quite in accordance with the slogan: More than a toy… he’s your best friend. Chucky’s voice has been recast too, since Brad Dourif will be replaced after 30 years.

With respect to the plot, new “Child’s Play” has played it safer, though. Even if there have been some rumors about a “Stranger Things” influence on the remake—it will allegedly feature a group of kids instead of just one—the official synopsis seems identical to the ‘80s classic:

The story follows a mother named Karen who gives her son Andy a toy doll for his birthday, unaware of its sinister nature.

The direction falls to the newcomer Lars Klevberg as he waits for the eventual release of “Polaroid,” the adaptation to the big screen of his first short film. The most interesting aspect is, however, the production, entrusted to Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg, both responsible for the box-office hit “It.”

Another major surprise has been the cast, starring Aubrey Plaza, mostly known for playing April Ludgate on “Parks and Recreation” and Lenny Busker on “Legion,” Brian Tyree Henry, who exploded on “Atlanta” and swiftly moved to the critically acclaimed “If Beale Street Could Talk” and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” and Gabriel Bateman (“Lights Out”).

The anticipated reboot is set to be released on June 21, 2019.
