Christopher Nolan's Latest Described As 'North By Northwest' Meets 'Inception' [Updated With WB Response]

UPDATED: Warner Bros. reached out to us and said the report from Production Weekly is “inaccurate.” The original article follows.

If there was another filmmaker out there with a bigger love of the theatrical experience than Steven Spielberg, it’s Christopher Nolan. Going to see a Nolan film in a theater is almost a requirement, at this point. When you strip away the Dolby Atmos, the massive screen, and the immersive shots, what you’re left with is, debatably an okay-to-good story with some quality acting. Needless to say, the man is a genius when it comes to big screen spectacle. And unsurprisingly, for his next film, Nolan’s urging theater exhibitors to 100% support him, and in turn, he’ll present yet another project that brings butts to seats.

Recently, Nolan presented an eight-minute video presentation to the UK Cinema Association conference (via ScreenDaily). And as you might expect, given the theater exhibitors in attendance and Nolan’s penchant for professing his love of the big-screen experience, the filmmaker was ecstatic to talk about his love of going to the cinema.

“My memories are not just of the films themselves and the amazing adventures unfolding on screen; they’re also of the sense of occasion, of being a young child entering an architectural space that’s so much bigger and grander than myself; the thrill of the curtains opening, moving to enlarge the screen for a widescreen presentation,” said Nolan.

He continued, “Above all, my enduring memories are of scale, of the size of screen, the idea of seeing people and places that are larger than life, potentially overwhelming but engrossing and involving.”

The filmmaker also talked about how he’s going to rely on these exhibitors to help bring his next film to life. He said he “will certainly be asking [exhibitors] to really help us, and asking you to be our partners in terms of putting on a show for the audience and giving them a reason to come out for the evening, and engage with the world of cinema which we all love so much.”

While not calling out streaming, specifically, Nolan brought up the fact that it’s not just expected that people will go out to the multiplex. Instead, there has to be a reason, a draw, that brings people to the cinema.

He said, “What we never want to forget is the idea of showmanship…whatever the economic realities are, whatever costs need to be cut or corners need to be cut.”

Nolan continued, “The pressure is on us as never before to give people a reason to get out of the house.”

While we don’t have a title or plot synopsis, even though a Production Weekly tweet calls it a “romantic thriller, like “‘North by Northwest’ in tone meets ‘Inception,'” the filmmaker promised that he’s “about to start shooting” his next project, which has a release date of July 17, 2020.
