Confirmed: 'Jurassic World' Filmmaker Colin Trevorrow To Direct 'Star Wars: Episode 9′

Colin Trevorrow, Star Wars: Episode 9′8/15/15 Update: the news has been confirmed at D23.

Before he became the billion dollar breaking director of "Jurassic World," Steven Spielberg wasn’t the only person in Hollywood who had indie director Colin Trevorrow on his radar. Back in 2012, the filmmaker’s name surfaced as a potential helmer for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," and Trevorrow explained to us last month how his name got linked.

"It really all came about from Brad Bird’s initial [almost] involvement and of us potentially collaborating with it," he said. "I remember at the time, I was in Sweden and I was as surprised as anyone else because I had never heard that. That was a shocker. I hadn’t talked to Bird. But man, I couldn’t be more thrilled of what I’ve seen of what J.J. Abrams is doing and certainly, with the choice of Rian Johnson. I think he is a truly, truly great filmmaker. It’s all very exciting." And it looks like Trevorrow is going to get his shot.

Heroic Hollywood is reporting that later today at San Diego Comic Con, Trevorrow will be announced as the director of "Star Wars: Episode IX." That’s all the news there is for now…but obviously if this is true, more details will emerge soon.

But will Lucasfilm have anything big left to announce later? Between this news and Phil Lord and Chris Miller being hired to helm the "Star Wars Anthology: Young Han Solo" flick, one wonders if Lucasfilm and co. will have any extra goods to wow the fans in Hall H. Regardless, this is pretty exciting news, and clearly Trevorrow has proved himself to be both a crowdpleasing, smart, and very successful blockbuster director. Thoughts?
