The 2021 Oscars didn’t look like a typical awards show. It surely didn’t flow like a typical awards show. But yet, no matter how much you change things up, you can’t escape the inevitability of awards acceptance speeches. And with no orchestra to play them off and cut speeches short, this year’s winners were able to dig deep and deliver some truly memorable moments.
The highlights, of course, include Daniel Kaluuya reminding everyone that his parents had sex and that because he won, he’s going to party. Then there’s “Minari’s” Yuh-Jung Youn, who seemed just excited to finally get a chance to say hi to Brad Pitt. And let’s not forget the powerful, touching story told by “Another Round” filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg, as well as the adorable, shocked words from Emerald Fennell for her “Promising Young Woman” screenplay trophy.

All told, the extended acceptance speeches led to some great moments where people were actually able to get full thoughts out without the fear of a ticking clock and a meddlesome band. You can watch some of the highlights below.
