Just over a month ago, it was announced that “Deadpool 2” was getting a special PG-13 re-release later this year, perfectly timed for the Christmas season. However, outside of that info, no one really knows what to expect. Is this just a lazy repackaging of the original film, minus all the swearing and some of the violence? Or is this some sort of whole new take on the film? Well, according to the writers of “Deadpool,” “Deadpool 2,” and whatever this new thing is called, it’s somewhere in the middle.
In an interview with /Film, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the aforementioned writers, discuss this new holiday version of “Deadpool 2” and reveal that while the film isn’t a complete overhaul of the very successful sequel, there are still some new additions that should delight fans.
“We definitely shot new stuff. And recently too,” revealed Wernick.
He continued, “After ‘Deadpool 2’ came out and we were all sitting around, we came to it less about the idea of let’s make a PG-13 movie and more, ‘Let’s talk a little bit about Deadpool.’ We were kicking around some ideas and then I think it was Ryan [Reynolds] who had the great framing device and we all got excited and went to the studio. They said, ‘Yeah, let’s do it. Fire up the cameras.’ About two months ago we were out on soundstages shooting again. Ryan was in the suit and the gang was back together, Dave Leitch and Ryan and us having a great time and laughing. It comes together great so we’re super excited about it.”

So, we know that director David Leitch is returning, along with Reynolds, but who else is joining the crew of returnees from “Deadpool 2?” When asked that question, Reese replied, “We can’t say.”
However, fans shouldn’t expect a whole new film or a massive re-edit of the recent sequel. The writers confirmed that not much about the actual film has changed, minus the obvious PG-13 edits and the new scenes. But short of that, they’re not able to reveal much.
“We don’t want to mislead nor do we want to spoil,” Wernick said. “As we get closer, we’ll see what the studio will let us talk about. I wouldn’t reveal too much about it because it’ll ruin the fun for the audience.”

Obviously, if there’s one thing that Fox’s marketing team knows how to do, it’s how to sell a “Deadpool” film to fans. We can fully expect to get some more information and fourth-wall-breaking ads featuring the superhero in the coming weeks, as the studio prepares to release this film opposite a murderer’s row of blockbuster films.
The Christmas Edition of “Deadpool 2” is scheduled to hit theaters on December 21.
