'El Refugio' Trailer: New Paranormal Series From Producer Pablo Larraín Pits A Family Against An Invisible Enemy

“The unknown stalks, you must escape:” is the tagline from the trailer for the forthcoming Spanish-language miniseries “El Refugio” (“The Shelter”), which portrays one family’s odyssey against a force of nature they aren’t even sure exists.

As a vacationing family begins to witness bizarre events on television, such as mass military mobilization, they find that their home in the Mexican countryside is untouched, “nothing seems to be happening.” The family’s locale is calm, offering the various pleasantries a springtime vacation carries. Instead, all of the chaos emanates from the television, the screen, and the site of mediation. This calm eventually seeps out of the screen, as the trailer features visceral images of mass migration, civil unrest, and odd behaviors from various animals and insects. The series promises a mix of intelligent watching, with its fixation on the anxieties wrought by the screen, with its fair of thrills and jump scares.

Amongst the various producers of the show are critically acclaimed director Pablo Larraín, who’s known for his biopics, “Jackie” and “Spencer.” The series is based on an original story from Julio Rojas (“La Vida de los Peses”).
