Evan Rachel Wood Thinks Chief Hopper On 'Stranger Things' Is A Problematic TV Love Interest

**Very minor spoilers ahead for “Stranger Things 3.”**

Police chief Hopper is one of the most beloved characters on Netflix’s hit sci-fi/horror series “Stranger Things.” Portrayed by David Harbour, Hopper is often shown to be the bumbling, small-town police officer that has been seen in films for decades. However, over the course of time, you find that the chief is a bit misunderstood and is actually a damn fine officer, despite his many flaws.

And it’s those flaws that seem to have stuck with “Westworld” actress Evan Rachel Wood during her recent viewing of “Stranger Things 3.” Not only does she notice the deficiencies in Harbour’s character, but Wood also thinks there’s a toxicity present that should scare off any potential love interests. And ultimately, this makes Hopper a bit of a problematic character in 2019.

“You should never date a guy like the cop from #strangerthings,” tweeted Wood. “Extreme jealousy and violent rages are not flattering or sexy like TV would have you believe. That is all.”

Oh, but that wasn’t all.

She continued, “Yes I am aware its ‘just a show’ and its set ‘in the 80s’ even though this stuff was unacceptable then too, but thats exactly my point. Its just a show and this is a gentle reminder not to fall for this crap in real life. Red flags galore.”

Now, Wood didn’t just give these judgments without a shred of evidence. She brings up a part of “Stranger Things 3” that is prominent in the first several episodes, as Hopper and Joyce team up in a weird buddy cop/will-they-or-won’t-they dynamic. At one point in the season, Joyce bails on a “date” with Hopper, which leads him into a drunken stupor and eventually he holds it against her at almost every turn.

Yes, it’s played for laughs. But also, it’s a bit…cringe-y, to say the least.

Wood tweeted, “She rescheduled the date he yelled and got in her face about while policing every guy she spoke to. No thanks.”

Of course, Hopper is regularly shown to be a fairly problematic guy on the show. He has a drinking problem. He’s not a great foster dad. He smokes about four packs of cigarettes a day (which is its own controversy). And to top it all off, he does tend to fly off the handle over little things, as well as picking fights with just about everyone. Even without the Joyce stuff, we’d go out on a limb and say that he’s probably not a great romantic partner, to begin with.

“Stranger Things 3” is available now on Netflix. You can find out for yourself if you’d be willing to date Hopper as you watch the new season.
