'Everybody Knows' Trailer: Penélope Cruz & Javier Bardem Star In New Thriller From Director Asghar Farhadi

It had to happen eventually. After 2017’s “The Salesman” brought Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi his second Oscar win in the Best Foreign Language Film category, the director’s next picture was set to be just one more triumph in a run of critically adulated works that was showing no signs of losing momentum. At the time, few could’ve anticipated the collective ‘meh’ that “Everybody Knows” was ultimately met with when it premiered as the opening feature at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.

Jessica Kiang spoke for many when she ended her B- review on the thought that Farhadi has delivered “perhaps his most ordinary film.” Of course, to put this response into context, this is still a film from the director of “A Separation” that we’re talking about here, and our review also observes that there are “moments, whole sequences really, that remind us of Farhadi’s gift for creating extraordinary tension out of domestic drama.”

So if “Everybody Knows” won’t be getting those “About Elly”-level plaudits, you may still find plenty to appreciate in this small town thriller. And with spouses Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem in starring roles, it’s clear that Farhadi will be reaching new audiences with this feature either way.

Beyond this, the cast includes Ricardo Darín, Bárbara Lennie, Inma Cuesta, Elvira Mínguez, Eduard Fernández, and Ramón Barea. On DP duties is José Luis Alcaine, a regular Pedro Almodóvar collaborator whose work includes “Volver” and “The Skin I Live In.”

Focus Features won the bidding war for “Everybody Knows” after its Cannes premiere, with the film scheduled to hit theaters on February 8, 2019.

Here’s a synopsis, as well as the trailer:

Laura (Penélope Cruz) and her children travel from Buenos Aires to the village where she was born, on a Spanish vineyard, to attend her sister’s wedding, but unexpected events lead this gathering toward a crisis that exposes the family’s hidden past.
