Exclusive: Clip And Storyboards From Turkish Cop Horror Flick 'Baskin'

BaskinWe didn’t manage to catch the Turkish horror flick "Baskin" at TIFF or Fantastic Fest, but the buzz around the genre-bending, twisted picture has put the film firmly on our radar. Centering around a cadre of police who are called in for backup in a small town, they find themselves in a creepy house of horrors, with a rookie cop tormented by nightmares. "Baskin" means "police raid" in Turkish, but we have a feeling that it’s not the kind of police raid we’re normally used to. Turkey’s become a hotbed for genre and horror offerings, and "Baskin" is clearly part of that wave.

Today, we’ve not only got a clip from the film that captures its eerie atmosphere and distinctive look, but also several storyboards of the clip by Cem Özüduru. The comic book artist is well known in Turkey and he also co-wrote the film with director Can Evrenol, and created all the concept art. The storyboards and clips are a fascinating pairing, especially with Özüduru’s comics background. Check out the clip and storyboard artwork below, as well as the synopsis.

A five-man unit of cops on night patrol get more than they bargain for when they arrive at a creepy backwater town in the middle of nowhere after a call comes over the radio for backup. Entering a derelict building, the seasoned tough guys and their rookie junior, who’s still haunted by a traumatic childhood dream, do the one thing you should never do in this kind of movie: they split up. They soon realize they’ve stumbled into a monstrous charnel house and descend into an ever-more nightmarish netherworld where grotesque, mind-wrenching horrors await them at every turn. This is one Baskin (that’s “police raid” to you non-Turkish speakers) that isn’t going to end well. But wait! Things aren’t what they seem in this truly disturbing, outrageously gory, and increasingly surreal film whose unpredictable narrative pulls the carpet from under your feet and keeps you guessing right up to the final moment. A wildly original whatsit that reconfirms Turkey as the breakout national cinema of the moment.

"Baskin" is being released by IFC Midnight and hits VOD and the IFC Film Center in New York tomorrow, with an LA bow at Arena Screen on April 1st.
