No sooner does one festival wrap up, another gets away, and while Tribeca finished up its run yesterday (we have a few more reviews still to come, so stay tuned for those), late last week saw the opening of Toronto’s Hot Docs, one of the foremost non-fiction film festivals in the world. One key highlight of the program looks to be “Susanne Bartsch: On Top.”

Hailing from the music video and art-film veterans Anthony&Alex, it’s a portrait of the legendary nightlife queen and fashion icon of the title, the Swiss-born promoter who has been a crucial figure on the queer scene for decades now, helping, among many other achievements, to create the Love Ball for AIDS fundraising. The film looks at her influence on NYC culture and her legacy, with contributions from figures including RuPaul, Michael Musto and more.
The movie premieres at Hot Docs today, and we’re delighted to be premiering an exclusive poster and clip for the movie, and quite striking they are too. Anthony&Alex say “Over the past two years we have delved deep into Susanne’s world, and gotten to know her on a level that isn’t obvious at first glance. We’re thrilled to give our perspective on a life very different than most. It’s incredibly surreal to be not only premiering our first feature film at Hot Docs, but also this amazing poster. Like the film, it reveals Susanne in a way that people might not be expecting, and that has been very important to us from the beginning.”
