'Fleabag' Star Phoebe Waller-Bridge Joins The Han Solo ‘Star Wars’ Spin-Off Film

It’s possible you may not have seen it because it’s only available on Amazon Prime, but one of our favorite shows from last year was “Fleabag.” A dark, hilarious character study of a 30-something British woman who can’t get her sh*t together, “Fleabag” is the brainchild of writer/comedian Phoebe Waller-Bridge. It’s a show that received some critical acclaim, but still feels like it deserves much more attention — calling it the “Girls” of the U.K. would be a total disservice to the series which is much more about self-destructive tendencies (Waller-Bridge also wrote/starred and produced in an earlier show called “Crashing”).

Well, “Fleabag” and its talented star may receive a lot more attention. Waller-Bridge has just been cast in the untitled Han Solo movie as a “key” CGI motion-capture character — perhaps another buddy part like Alan Tudyk’s K-2SO in “Rogue One.” Given pretty much every “Star Wars” film has a robot or some sidekick of some kind (BB-8, R2-D2, C-3PO), it wouldn’t surprise if this is the kind of character directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller have cooked up. But otherwise, there’s no other details unveiled, which is par for the course with the “Star Wars” universe. Lucasfilm always plays everything very close to the chest.

While currently in production, like this addition of Waller-Bridge, it appears the movie is still adding cast members as it goes. The untitled Han Solo “Star Wars” movie already stars Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson and Emilia Clarke and is rumored to open in December 2018. Oh, and go run and watch “Fleabag” right now. [Variety]
