The Writer’s Guild of American handed out the 2018 WGA Awards at two concurrent ceremonies on Sunday evening in New York and Los Angeles. As always, the writers liked to defy expectations while keeping their reputations intact as “sort of” Oscar precursors and that’s good news for “Get Out” and “Call Me By Your Name.” The Los Angeles ceremony was hosted by Patton Oswalt and the New York ceremony was emceed by Julie Klausner.
James Ivory and “Call Me By Your Name” took the Adapted Screenplay award, a similar honor to the USC Scripter Award both he, the film and author André Aciman won last night. Because of numerous WGA qualifications this award doesn’t always lineup with its Oscar equivalent. In fact only six of the last nine WGA winners took Oscar in this category, but with a duplicate set of nominees for Oscar it is the clear frontrunner.
Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” took the Original Screenplay award. That field did not include Oscar nominee Martin McDonagh for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” This category also has only lined up with the eventual Academy Award winner six out of the last nine years.
“Jane,” which was shockingly snubbed by The Academy for an Oscar nomination, picked up yet another guild win in the Documentary Writing category. It also won the PGA Award for Documentary last month.
On the television side there were predictable wins for “The Handmaid’s Tale” (two actually) and “Big Little Lies” as well as a surprise win the Episodic Comedy category for “Will & Grace” (it’s first guild win this season after one previous non-winning nomination 18 years ago). There was also a shocking win for the relatively little seen “Flint” over “Feud: Bette and Joan” and “Godless” for the Long Form Original award.
Other winners tonight included the staffs of “Veep,” “Saturday Night Live,” “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” “General Hospital” and “Hollywood Game Night” as well as “American Girl – Ivy & Julie,” “Better Call Saul,” “Bojack Horseman” and “The 39th Kennedy Center Honors,” among others.
