When you play the game of thrones, you win, or you die. Or…you guess the correct ending to the game and live to lovingly pen the story of your knight, slain in shining armor. We can neither confirm nor deny if Gwendoline Christie has the prophetic power of the three-eyed raven, but either way, it turns out that her premonitions about the series’ finale came true.

“I thought it would be Bran because I thought it would be the least likely person,” Christie told Indiewire this week of her predictions made months earlier. “In my mind, what ‘Game of Thrones’ has always done is subvert narrative.”

Indeed, the eight season epic has developed a notorious penchant for its stunning twists of fate and fortune. The world of ‘Thrones’ is one in which our comfortable conventions of storytelling are challenged continuously, complicated, and defied. When the honorable Ned Stark is swiftly disposed of in the first season, it becomes clear that good, selfless characters rarely live to see the next day and all bets are off.
It is a world defined by its brutality, and a story motivated by an end to the chaos. Perhaps, then, after years of violent and vengeful quests for power, a resolution could only be reached with someone willing to put an end to the cycle. “It’s the idea of the final ruler being someone who isn’t interested in power, who isn’t ambitious and therefore is entirely unlikely to become corrupted by power. That’s what I thought that George R.R. Martin would go with,” Christie elaborated.
Bran’s immunity to corruption is precisely what separates him so drastically from the rhythm of Westeros and its inhabitants. He is so divorced from it, in fact, as to inhabit something of another world where he is gradually afforded inhuman omniscience. The boy who once scaled castle walls for a higher view is now given the gifts of infinite sight and stories. His peaceful ascension to the throne is the poetic answer to the act that set the pace for Thrones’ vicious amorality – his fall in the first episode. Though the series finale provoked the ire of fans worldwide, it may go to show how powerful and unexpected this final subversion truly is. Well done, Gwendoline.
