'Hawkeye': Marvel Recruits Comedic Directors Behind 'Troop Zero' And 'Comrade Detective' To Tackle Disney+ TV Series

We may not be getting “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” next month, but Marvel is still making moves on their other Disney+ TV series, as they just started recruiting their directorial team for the “Hawkeye” series, and they are as surprising as when Taika Waititi directed a Thor movie.

The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop, and they say that Bert and Bertie (real names Amber Finlayson and Katie Ellwood), the female writing/directing duo behind the Amazon coming-of-age comedy “Troop Zero,” will helm a block of episodes on the Marvel series. Additionally “Saturday Night Live” veteran Rhys Thomas, who also directed the fantastic Netflix comedy special “John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch,” will also direct a block of episodes. As it was previously reported, Jonathan Igla (“Mad Men“) will write the series.

The last time we saw Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) he had ditched his Hawkeye moniker, adopted the persona of Ronin, and went on a killing spree in Asia in “Avengers: Endgame.” The much darker turn the character took in the film makes these hiring choices a bit surprising, to say the least.

Based on the past credits of the directors, it is fair to assume that “Hawkeye” will have a much more light-hearted tone compared to “Avengers: Endgame,” and it’s not unlike Marvel to change the tone of a character from one movie to the next. After all, Thor went from being a Shakespearean tragic figure to one of the MCU’s biggest comedic players in “Thor: Ragnarok.” Or Bert and Bertie, as well as Thomas, follow the Russo Brothers’ path of shrugging off their comedic approach to do a serious, gritty take on the characters.

Last we heard, the show’s story was going to include Barton mentoring a young replacement, Kate Bishop — reportedly to be played by Hailee Steinfeld — but The Hollywood Reporter offers no updates on casting.
