In the world of film and TV comedy, there aren’t many names bigger than Issa Rae, Elizabeth Banks, and Mindy Kaling. And HBO Max knows this. That’s why the streaming platform recently announced deals with all three women, who will each create one new series for the upcoming service.
According to Deadline, Rae is working on a comedy, tentatively titled “Rap Shit.” Banks is developing a superhero comedy aimed at a younger audience, called “DC Super Hero High.” And Kaling, who has no shortage of comedy projects that she has written and produced, will write and showrun a comedy titled “College Girls.”

Banks’ series is a comedy that will focus on the high school lives of gifted teens that will someday turn into the DC comics superheroes you know and love. “Rap Shit” will follow a female rap group trying to make a name for themselves in the music business. And “College Girls,” as the title suggests, follows a group of young female freshmen who are trying to navigate their newfound freedom and life at college.
Sarah Aubrey, head of original content at HBO Max, said, “Elizabeth Banks, Issa Rae and Mindy Kaling are three of the most gifted women in our industry, and are now bringing their impressive, original projects to HBO Max.”

Kevin Reilly, chief content officer, HBO Max and president TBS, TNT, and truTV, added, “These three incredible talents embody the distinct and diverse voices that will give flight to the quality HBO Max brand promise across all audiences.”
Much like the direction that Apple and Disney are taking with their upcoming streaming services, it appears that WarnerMedia is doing the same with HBO Max, by hiring big names that will develop content for the platform. With the Streaming Wars kicking into high gear later this year and into 2020, customers will be forced to make tough decisions about which services to subscribe to and which to skip. HBO Max is hoping that names like Rae, Banks, and Kaling are enough to sway that choice.
The new streaming service is set to launch in May 2020 and cost $14.99 per month.
