'Shazam 2': Henry Cavill Won't Suit Up As Superman, Despite Rumors

In the latest case of unfounded Internet rumors going amok, several rumors of Henry Cavill suiting up as Superman for the upcoming DC film “Shazam! Fury of the Gods.” Now, the record can be set straight, as Cavill will not be appearing in the upcoming “Shazam” sequel — though that doesn’t mean he won’t show up elsewhere.

According to Variety, two sources “with direct knowledge of the production and Cavill’s schedule” confirmed that the actor will not reprise his role as Clark Kent/Superman in the upcoming “Shazam” sequel. The first “Shazam!” features a cameo by Superman at the very end of the film, but even though it features the DCEU version of Superman’s suit, we don’t see the actor’s face. In reality, stunt performer Ryan Handley donned the suit for the cameo.

The director of both “Shazam!” and “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” David F. Sandberg, addressed the recent rumors by pointing that Cavill was indeed supposed to don the Superman cape in the 2019 film. “Halfway through shooting ‘Shazam,’ the plan was still for Cavill to be in it,” Sandberg tweeted, saying he isn’t commenting on casting rumors because “you can’t be sure about anything until it’s happened.” Keeping to the playful tone of the films, Sandberg confirms a different rumor. “Though I can confirm with ~90% certainty that Shazam will appear in ‘Shazam 2.’ So if you’re a fan of that character you might enjoy ‘Shazam 2.'”

Cavill is still very much interested in returning to the DC universe, and last year it was reported that Cavill was set to do at least one cameo in an upcoming DC film — just not “Shazam 2.” Cavill even said in 2019 that “the cape is still in the closet,” and “There’s a lot I have to give for Superman yet.”
