Interview: Nicolas Winding Refn On 'The Neon Demon,' Instagram & Wanting To Make A Spy Movie - Page 2 of 2

The Neon Demon 2Are your kids deeply enmeshed in the Instagram and Snapchat scene?

My kids are very advanced on that level, yes!

Does this film reflect what you’re observing in their lives as they relate to image and fashion?
I think it’s my fantasy of what it would be like to be a 16-year old girl and have life ahead of you.

You’ve talked about your career in phases, with “Bronson” marking the beginning of a second phase. Where does this film fall?
It kind of completes the second phase. There’s a very strong connect between this movie and “Bronson.” There’s something very operatic about both movies. They’re combinations of very different kinds of movies.

If you’re actively considering those films as phases of creativity, what do they reflect about you?
That’s where I zone out and you guys step in!

The Neon Demon 5Tell me about your interest in remaking a handful of classic films, if those are still on the boards.

Maniac Cop” we’re shooting in the fall. [John Hyams is directing from a script by Ed Brubaker.] “Witchfinder General” I was approached about doing a remake, and I thought it was interesting. Almost like a challenge. But it’s of course an incredible film by itself, so to reinvent it you need to be very carefully planned out. And “What Have You Done To Solange?” is just a really great Italian horror film that can be enjoyed in a new way. But I’m only producing these films.

How many of those films serve to channel your interest in shooting movies in Los Angeles?
Certainly, “Maniac Cop” we’re shooting in LA and I would like to do “Solange” in LA as well.

Can you tell me about your television show, “Les Italiens”?
Well, someone wrote strange things about that. I have an idea for a TV show called “Les Italiens,” and that’s where it is right now. It’s like other TV ideas I had, it’s on the drawing board. It’s a show in Italian, I thought it could be fun to live in Rome and Paris for a couple months.

Do you have another feature lined up?
I think everyone always has another feature lined up. I don’t know, I would like to do a spy movie, maybe.
