Isabel May Is In On 'The Wonder Twins' Joke: "It's Not The 'Super Friends,' We're Doing A Different Thing"

When it comes to comic book cinema, it’s the MCU’s world, and everyone else just lives there. Actually, you could say the same thing about cinema in general right now, to this writer’s dismay. Still, Marvel’s monopoly on the movies right now isn’t keeping its competition from attempts to spice things up. And DC Films, MCU’s main rival, has a lot of different projects lined up to even the odds, including a movie based around “The Wonder Twins.”

Unverified rumors have circulated that Warner Bros. may have shelved “The Wonder Twins,” but that didn’t stop “1883” star Isabel May from discussing the project on The Playlist’s The Bingeworthy Podcast. May’s in line to play Jayna, one half of the Wonder duo, who first appeared in 1970s Hanna-Barbera’s Saturday morning cartoon “Super Friends” animated show before DC Comics later introduced them into its comic universe.

On the podcast, May detailed how writer/director Adam Sztykiel first sold her on the project and how their approach to the Twins will be different from previous iterations. She also said she’s aware that to some fans, “The Wonder Twins” from the “Super Friends” is considered something of a joke, but they’re aiming for something different.

“I’m so excited to work with [Sztykiel] and Marty Bowen [‘First Man,’ ‘Maze Runner,’ ‘Twilight,’ ‘Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies’], who’s a producer on it – this is his project just as much as Adam’s, and it’s just really cool to be a part of that world,” May said. “I love learning about certain characters, so I’ve read all [of the comics]. I know they’re kind of the butt of the joke, sort of thing, but that’s what’s so fun about it is you can kind of go anywhere with it. And so I’ve read all of the comic books that they’re in and even watched the show [‘Super Friends’], and it’s not that, OK? It’s a different era, and we’re kind of doing a different thing.”

In DC Comics lore, the Wonder Twins are deep cut characters, so deep that May was unfamiliar with them. May continued, “I’d never heard of them, to be honest. And I’m someone who is more of a Japanese Anime/Manga lover myself. I could talk all day about that, but not necessarily Marvel or DC Comics. I don’t want to lie – it’s just the truth, but I have learned everything there is to know about the Wonder Twins now. What I’m thrilled about – I guess I can’t really say anything, but I think [the approach] is really unique and fun.”

If the film does, in fact, happen — and just as we’re going to print a Wall Street Journal article seems to suggest the rumors are true — “The Wonder Twins” comes far after a lot of upcoming DC fare, like “Black Adam,” which Sztykiel co-wrote the screenplay for. So, has pre-production gotten to costumes yet?

“Not yet. I’m nearly there. It’s a long process,” she admitted. “It’s begun, let’s just say… it’s funny because I keep reminding myself, like, ‘You should probably work out…like it’s really tight. You should probably go see if you could get a little muscle definition on your body.”
