James Wan To Produce A New 'Aquaman' Animated Series For HBO Max

For months, we’ve known that the next time we’ll see Jason Momoa’s King of Atlantis, Aquaman, on the big screen will be in 2022, with the release of “Aquaman 2.” However, little did we know that director James Wan had something sneaky planned with the DC superhero, namely an animated limited series.

According to Deadline, HBO Max has given the greenlight to James Wan to produce a new limited series titled “Aquaman: King of Atlantis.” Other than the very big difference between animation and live-action, the new series will differ from the billion-dollar film by focusing on more ecological and ethical themes, as ‘King of Atlantis’ aims to be a program for kids and families.

Sarah Aubrey, head of original content at HBO Max, said, “This DC property is a fan-favorite, rich with well-known characters and dynamic storylines. On the heels of Warner Bros. Pictures’ box office smash hit, we are certain ‘Aquaman: King of Atlantis’ will be an exciting addition to our already robust slate of kids and family programming.”

Here’s the family-friendly synopsis for the series:

“The series begins with Aquaman’s first day on the job as king of Atlantis and he’s got a lot of catching up to do. Luckily, he has his two royal advisors to back him up – Vulko, the scholar, and Mera, the water controlling warrior-princess. Between dealing with unscrupulous surface dwellers, elder evils from beyond time and his own half-brother who wants to overthrow him, Aquaman is going to have to rise to the challenge and prove to his subjects, and to himself, that he’s the right man for the trident!”

No word on whether or not Jason Momoa will return to voice the lead character. Nor do we know if Amber Heard and Willem Dafoe will return, as well. However, with Wan attached and HBO Max producing, perhaps we can see the stars lend their voices for the “Aquaman” series as a way to keep people interested in the interim between the original film and its upcoming sequel.

No release date has been set for “Aquaman: King of Atlantis,” but we’ll keep you posted.
