Jim Jarmuchs's 'The Limits Of Control' Hitting Theaters Officially May 22

We just finished writing about and heavily anticipating Jim Jarmusch’s follow-up to to 2005’s “Broken Flowers” in our Most Anticipated of 2009 feature.

Titled “The Limits of Control,” details on the film were pretty scarce other than the fact that Isaach De Bankolé played a mysterious loner who operates outside the law in Spain and that the film also boasted a stellar co-starring cast of Bill Murray,Tilda Swinton, John Hurt, Paz de la Huerta and Gael García Bernal, plus celebrated cinematographer Christopher Doyle lensing the film.

Now Focus Features have revealed some of their 2009 slate with a few more details. For one, the film now has an official release date which is May 22 in limited (or select theater release). Does that mean it could appear first at Cannes 2009 which runs May 13-24? Could be.

Ok, there’s not a lot of more details, but Focus’ mostly just-as-vague synopsis says: “The Limits of Control” is the story of a mysterious loner (Isaach De Bankolé), a stranger, whose activities remain meticulously outside the law. He is in the process of completing a job, yet he trusts no one, and his objectives are not initially divulged. The film is set in the striking and varied landscapes of contemporary Spain (both urban and otherwise).”

De Bankolé is an incredibly underrated actor and he starred alongside Forest Whitaker in Jarmuch’s 1999 classic, “Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai.”

Ok, not a ton of new info, but better than nothing and hey, it has a release date! Also of note, Focus Features has settled on a date for The Coen Brothers’ “A Serious Man” which now comes out in limited release on October 2, the Sam Mendes-directed, Dave Eggers-penned comedy, “Away We Go” (June 5th) and as we noted in our 2009 piece, Ang Lee’s “Taking Woodstock” is still set for a August 14th (limited) release.
