You really have to wonder how many scripts are piling up in front of Dwayne Johnson‘s door. If there was any doubts about the charismatic star’s pull at the box office ,”Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle” should easily put those to rest.
Sony and Columbia Pictures‘ franchise reboot has had an impressive, and truly staggering run at the box office that shows no sign of slowing down just yet. In the six weeks it has been in release at the box office it has never fallen below the number two slot, and this weekend, ‘Jumanji’ returned to number one for the fourth time. Granted, it was a very quiet weekend with virtually no competition, but the $11 million pulled in by the video game adventure was enough to move it past last weekend’s chart topper, “Maze Runner: The Death Cure.” This will be the last time The Rock and his pals take hold of the pole position with “Fifty Shades Freed” opening on Friday, but it has truly been incredible to watch ‘Jumanji’ run all over the box office. The film now stands at $352 million domestic, with a total global haul of $855 million. By time it wraps up, ‘Jumanji’ will land just shy of the $1 billion mark.
The only other movie opening in wide release this weekend was “Winchester,” which Lionsgate didn’t screen for critics. Horror flicks are the one genre that’s often perceived as “critic-proof” but audiences simply weren’t interested in this haunted house flick. The picture took a bullet, pulling in a measly $9.2 million, all but ensuring a quick journey to your local Redbox.
At the arthouse, things remained quiet as well, but Sebastian Lelio‘s Oscar nominated “A Fantastic Woman” rolled out on five screens with a modest $14,196 per screen average ($70,978 total).
