'Jungle Cruise' Trailer: Dwayne Johnson & Emily Blunt Head Up River To Adventure

A trip down a mighty river in cinema has proven that it can be both a grueling, physical challenge and an opportunity to reflect, quite literally. Perhaps, no two films embody those qualities more than the weekend trip from Hell in “Deliverance” and the quest to confront madness head-on in “Apocalypse Now.” But, let’s stop and take a breath for a second. At its heart, what makes such a journey fundamentally thrilling the most is seeing what might be encountered next. That pure exhilaration is what Disney is hoping to bring to the big screen with “Jungle Cruise.”

Steering the ship on this endeavor—based on the classic attraction of the same name—is director Jaume Collet-Serra. His credits include popular thrillers such as “Non-Stop” and “The Shallows,” so expect to see similar fare in this upcoming expedition. Writers Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (“Focus”) contribute to the project’s screenplay as does Michael Green, Oscar-nominated for 2017’s “Logan” along with James Mangold and Scott Frank. Additionally, how complete would an adventure like this be without a rousing score? James Newton Howard—an eight-time Academy Award nominee and one of the best in the business—is onboard as composer.

Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson—the film’s two main stars—have already brought their own magic to the House of Mouse’s canon. Blunt’s performance in “Into the Woods” was powerful, but her portrayal of the titular role in “Mary Poppins Returns” cemented her place in Disney lore forever. Johnson’s Maui was also a big reason that 2016’s “Moana” rode high waves of success. Here’s hoping that putting them together makes for an exciting excursion. Other along for the ride are Edgar Ramirez (“The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”), Jack Whitehall (“Bounty Hunters”), Jesse Plemons (“Game Night” & “Fargo”) and Oscar nominee Paul Giamatti (“Cinderella Man”).
