Kevin Feige Says 'Black Widow' Solo Film Is Aiming To Be The 'Better Call Saul' Of The Marvel Universe

If you’ve seen “Avengers: Endgame” (and the box office indicates everyone has), then you’re likely curious about how Marvel Studios is moving forward with a “Black Widow” film, in light of the events of the aforementioned film. Well, speaking to io9, the man with a plan, aka Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, talked about “Black Widow” and why he thinks a prequel is in order, while bringing up one of the best series on TV s inspiration.

“There’s a method to the madness,” Feige said. “There’s always a method and doing things in an unexpected way is something we find fun. There are ways to do prequels that are less informative or answer questions you didn’t necessarily have, and then there are ways to do prequels where you learn all sorts of things you never knew before.”

Interestingly enough, it would appear that Feige even has a non-superhero comparison that he looks at as a way to do a prequel the right way. And we have to admit, he does make a valid point.

“I look at ‘Better Call Saul’ as a wonderful example of a prequel that almost completely stands on its own apart from ‘Breaking Bad’ because it informs you about so many things you didn’t know about before,” he said.

If you’re not a “Breaking Bad” or “Better Call Saul” fan, you might not understand the reference. In the case of the AMC franchise, “Breaking Bad” told the story of a chemistry teacher that begins selling meth as a way to earn enough money to make sure his family is taken care of when he dies from terminal cancer. Of course, that’s just the beginning and the series goes into wildly different trajectories as it continued.

‘Saul,’ as the name suggests, focuses on the pre-“Breaking Bad” days of the aforementioned teacher’s lawyer, Saul Goodman. You can watch one without the other, but viewed together, presents a much clearer picture of the entirety of the story.

It’s been rumored pretty heavily that the “Black Widow” film will be a prequel that focuses on some sort of previously-unknown mission that Natasha engaged in before (or during) her time with the Avengers. The speculation is that Florence Pugh, who also appears in the film, will portray Yelena Belova, another trained assassin that would go on to become Black Widow for a time in Marvel Comics. This would simultaneously be a swansong for Scarlett Johansson as the character, while also introducing fans to the person who will become Black Widow in the MCU moving forward, played by Pugh.

Judging by the comments from Feige, he doesn’t confirm nor deny that is the case, and bringing up ‘Saul’ sort of fits with the rumors. Of course, we’ll find out for sure when the film arrives in theaters next year. That is, if Marvel Studios ever gets around to announcing “Black Widow.”
