The Producers Guild of America announced the 2017 PGA Awards nominees this morning, and the only surprise was a mutant mercenary who broke the fourth wall.

“Deadpool” was an unexpected inclusion among this year’s PGA theatrical honorees, a now-traditional precursor for a Best Picture nomination. The other nominees include many films observers believed would be there, including “Arrival,” “La La Land,” “Hell Or High Water,” “Moonlight” and “Manchester By The Sea.” “Fences,” “Hacksaw Ridge” and “Lion” increased their chances of making Oscars’ most prestigious club by making the PGA cut. It should be noted, though, that the Academy has only nominated eight films over the past two years. If you make the assumption that trend will continue and “Deadpool” is one of the two that will not earn a Best Picture nod, picking the second becomes a much more difficult task. “Hidden Figures“? “Hacksaw Ridge”? “Fences”? “Lion”? Everyone will be guessing until the Academy Award nominations are revealed on Jan. 24.
Films that are clearly on the outside looking in for Best Picture nominations now include “Jackie,” “Loving,” “Nocturnal Animals” and, most surprisingly, “Sully.”
The 2017 PGA Awards will be held on Jan. 28.
