Laura Dern & Will Ferrell Embezzle Money From A Fruitcake Maker In New Film From Max Winkler

Laura Dern and Will Ferrell are like peanut butter and chocolate. Two great things on their own, but when combined are likely to elevate both to next levels. And thankfully, filmmaker Max Winkler is going to make the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup of movies, “Fruitcake.”

If that description was confusing (and a bit corny, I know), basically, Deadline is reporting that Max Winkler has signed on to direct a new film titled “Fruitcake,” which will star Dern and Ferrell, who play a married couple that embezzles $17 million from the world’s most renowned fruitcake proprietor.

“Fruitcake” is written by Trey Selman, and as mentioned, tells the story of Sandy and Kay Jenkins, a middle-class married couple that steals a large amount of money from Collin Street Bakery, the world-leader in fruitcakes based in Corsicana, Texas.

Winkler most recently directed the underrated “Flower,” and is wrapping up work on his highly-anticipated “Jungleland.” The latter of which stars Charlie Hunnam, Jessica Barden, and Jack O’Connell. Outside of film, the director has helmed episodes of series like “New Girl,” “Lady Dynamite,” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.”

“Trey’s writing is original and dynamic and unlike any I’ve read before,” said Winkler, “and I’m deeply excited to help tell this story along with two of my favorite actors working today.”

Ferrell and Dern are incredible actors, with loads of quality films under their belts. Ferrell is wrapping up work on his “Force Majeure” remake, titled “Downhill,” and will star in the upcoming Netflix film “Eurovision.” Dern can most recently be seen in “Trial by Fire” and “JT Leroy.” She is also one of the stars of Greta Gerwig’s upcoming “Little Women.”

No release date has been set for “Fruitcake.”
