Margot Robbie Says 'Barbie' Film Is "Something Totally Different" Than What People Are Expecting

Yes, there is a new film based on the “Barbie” franchise coming. And yes, Margot Robbie is probably the perfect woman to portray the lead character in the film based on the popular line of children’s dolls. But according to Robbie and her producing partners, the “Barbie” film they’re working on is going to subvert your expectations, thanks in no small part to the script from co-writers Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig. Yep, you read that right.

According to a recent interview with THR, Robbie and her producing partner Josey McNamara talked about how the “Barbie” film is nothing like people expect it to be. For those people that don’t know, “Barbie” is based on the decades-old toy line that finds the idyllic blonde woman interacting with her “dream house” and “dream car” and basically living the life that little kids aspire to. It is also seen as potentially pretty vapid, materialistic, and bland. But Robbie feels like she has that figured out.

“Something like ‘Barbie’ where the IP, the name itself, people immediately have an idea of, ‘Oh, Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is,’ but our goal is to be like, ‘Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different — the thing you didn’t know you wanted,’” explained Robbie.

She added, “Now, can we truly honor the IP and the fan base and also surprise people? Because if we can do all that and provoke a thoughtful conversation, then we’re really firing on all cylinders.”

Her secret weapon is apparently the writing team of Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig, who have been attached to the project for a while now. The writing team is apparently putting a new spin on the “Barbie” property, and they’ll likely subvert your preconceived notions about what a film like this would be like.

“And then ‘Barbie,’ which is kind of our Everest,” said producing partner Josey McNamara. “As Margot said, you think you know what that movie is with Margot as Barbie, but Greta and Noah have subverted it, and we can’t wait to get into that one.”

Robbie also revealed that she’s unable to give any details about how far along the film is in development. She won’t even concede if the script is actually done. But clearly, this is a project that she holds near and dear to her heart and will likely try to get it going as soon as possible.
