'Birds Of Prey': There Are No Current Plans For A Sequel, Says Margot Robbie

Despite what flashy headlines at The Verge would have you believe, the lack of Marvel movies did not leave a void in 2020 — especially because we got “Birds of Prey” to kick some serious ass early in the year. Sadly, the film wasn’t as successful as studio executives wanted it to be, because star and producer Margot Robbie says there are no plans for a sequel at this time.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss her production company LuckyChap Entertainment. When asked if there will be a sequel to “Birds of Prey,” Margot Robbie denied any knowledge of a future film. “I don’t know,” Robbie said. “Nothing imminent at this stage, nothing worth mentioning.”

With a $82 million budget, “Birds of Prey” grossed a little over $200 million worldwide, being one of the last movies to be widely released in theaters before the pandemic truly hit Europe and the United States. Though the film got generally favorable reviews that praised the humor and the cast, the film didn’t connect enough with audiences, due at least in part to the film’s R-rating, and the bizarre and long title “Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).” The film even got retitled after initial box office results came in lower than expected, resulting in the new title “Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey,” which really should have been the original title, but that’s a conversation for another time.

Robbie also talked about the much-discussed and very controversial move by WarnerMedia to release the entire 2021 Warner Bros. slate day-and-date on HBO Max, and said “We are hopeful that this will work itself out and that Warner Bros. will do right by its storytellers.”
