It’s Friday, which means one last chance to cram as many “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2“ rumors into the calendar as humanly possible. With critics and select fans getting a first look at the film this past week, and Entertainment Weekly sharing some big updates on the movie in its Summer Movie Preview, the floodgates have opened on talking about James Gunn‘s highly anticipated sequel. Let’s take a look at what’s in the news today.
First up is the notion that James Gunn might take a step back — and up — at the conclusion of “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3.” As transcribed by The Hollywood Reporter yesterday, Gunn admitted that even if he walked away from the ‘Guardians’ franchise after the third movie, it “doesn’t mean it will be the end of my relationship with Marvel.” This is directly in line with Kevin Feige‘s comments on Monday, where the Marvel boss said that Gunn could “easily oversee additional stories beyond” the next movie.
Also noteworthy today is the rundown of the new cameos in the post-credits sequence at the end of “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2.” Like most super-teams, the guardians have pivoted slightly based on the artist and the writer, making them less a rigid team and more of a free-flowing group of a-holes. The big cameos at the end of the movie — which I won’t spoil here, but which you can read about at iO9 — could potentially add new members to the ‘Guardians’ movies or perhaps even a whole new iteration in the future. This is the suggestion of the film’s executive producer, anyways, with Jonathan Schwartz telling Entertainment Weekly that we there might be “new members by the end of the movie” as well as “allies who maybe aren’t with them at the end of the movie necessarily, [and who] go off on their own adventures.”
Next up is the brief controversy surrounding the cameo/non-cameo by Nathan Fillion in “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2.” Yesterday, the actor shared what looked like a photo from the set of James Gunn‘s Marvel sequel, with Fillion seeming to lament his character being cut from the movie.

When people complained about Fillion losing out on a role in the film, James Gunn quickly took to Twitter to clarify, stating that Fillion’s photo was “never a scene in the movie” and that his friend was simply “clowning around” on the set of the movie. Gunn and Fillion have a long history of working together, with Fillion appearing in both Gunn’s feature film debut “Slither” and his “PG Porn” web series in 2008. I guess if you’re joking around with your buddy on the set of one of the most expensive and highly anticipated movies of the year, somebody’s gonna take it the wrong way. Nature of the beast.
