Michael Giacchino Directing Marvel's Untitled Halloween Disney+ Special

Between “Moon Knight,” “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness,” the zombies of “What If…?,” and the upcoming vampiric “Blade” reboot, Marvel Studios has really been assembling a solid horror/occult corner in the MCU. Another one of those entries fleshing out Marvel’s horror and supernatural side will be a Halloween special that seemingly will feature various established characters alongside a Latino version of Werewolf By Night. And a sizable update on the upcoming streaming special has arrived.

The Wrap reports that Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino (“The Batman”) is set to direct the untitled Halloween streaming special starring Mexican actor Gael García Bernal as an incarnation of Werewolf By Night. Giacchino moving into directing for the Disney+ project would reaffirm a longstanding rumor that was recently highlighted by Variety.

The composer has a long history with the MCU writing scores for “Doctor Strange,” “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” and “Thor: Love & Thunder.” He also contributed to “The Falcon & The Winter Soldier” and “Captain America: Civil War.”

Giacchino isn’t a stranger to directing either. In the past few years, he’s been building up a resume of short films. Before he turned professional composer, he studied filmmaking at the School of Visual Arts in NYC before pivoting to music composition at Juilliard and UCLA. Giacchino’s most recent short, “Monster Challenge,” starring Patton Oswalt, debuted at the 2018 Fantastic Film Festival. Giacchino also directed an episode of “Star Trek: Short Treks” in 2019.

Marvel/Disney has yet to officially acknowledge the Halloween special’s existence, let alone give it a release date on Disney+. It’ll be interesting to see if they’ll announce new MCU goodies this summer at San Diego Comic-Con in July or wait a bit later until D23 Expo in September. It’s still unclear how this special will impact future films or television shows. Could we see other big horror characters appear within it beyond Werewolf By Night? We’ll have to wait and see.
